Kate Russell A young, first-time Nelson mum says she is “absolutely shocked” after a nurse told her to cover up while breastfeeding her six-week old son in a Nelson Hospital ward. Nicole Marr, 21, was at the hospital all day visiting her husband, Shannon, who had his appendix out just over a week ago. She says she was sitting down next to his bed, breast-feeding her son Louie, when a nurse came over and told her she needed to close the partition curtain. “She said that she wasn’t offended, but the doctors, other staff and patients might be,” says Nicole. “She went on for at least a minute and was quite nasty - I didn’t know what to say. Then she just pulled the curtain on me. “As a new mum, it’s so hard. I feel like it’s my right to breast-feed anywhere, and

The Mike Pero Nelson Giants first home game of the National Basketball League also doubled as the reopening of the region’s largest civic building, the Trafalgar Centre. It closed in December 2013 after it was deemed a risk to those inside in the event of a major earthquake.

Debate has raged since over the decision, but last year the council decided to strengthen the parts of the building and rebuild the aging entrance area that included the Victory room, kitchen and toilet block. The $12.9 million upgrade still has months to go, but enough has been done to allow the Giants back into the stadium they’ve played at since the 1980s. It was close to a sell-out and those who were there didn’t leave disap-

pointed with the Giants holding onto a slender 88-86 lead to claim their fifth win of the season over the Taranaki Mountain Airs. The win leaves the Giants top of the table. One of the Giants best on the night, Finn Delany, says it was great to be back. “Mentally, it’s a big boost for the team and the club to get back to Trafalgar, it’s where all the history

A Tahunanui man knocked off his bike a fortnight ago is urging drivers to take extra care when opening their car doors. Barry Taylor was cycling along Rocks Rd, near the Boathouse, when the driver’s door of a parked car was opened right in front of him. The impact sent him flying in the air before crashing to the ground and leaving the 55 year old with a fractured vertebra, ribs and pelvis. After spending a week in hospital he is now back at his home on Blackwood St – which is right next door to the home of Bill Higgins, who was killed when he was knocked off his bike on Tahunanui Drive last November. Barry says that he thought of Bill after the crash. “I thought ‘jeez, it could have been another one of us’. It certainly crossed my mind.” He says the impact of the accident left him in so much pain he couldn’t move. “Everyone who tried to touch me I just told them to stay away, just leave me alone. Someone said they called the ambulance and when they arrived they bundled me on board with multiple

He says it was agony. “It felt like my leg had been ripped out, it was excruciating. They gave me morphine, but the pain was so bad.” Barry was in hospital for eight days and now faces a three month recovery. He is a beneficiary, but does volunteer at the Koha Shed and is the area coordinator for the pink ribbon street appeal. He says he usually looks

through the rear windows of parked cars when he is cycling to make sure no one is in the driver’s seat who could open the door. But this car had tinted windows and luggage in the back that he couldn’t see through. “It could have been worse, I could have been killed. But I’m trying to stay positive,” he says. Police are following up with the man who opened the car door, he identified himself as “Steve” to nelsonlive.co.nz, which first reported the story. To cap off a crummy week for Barry, his beloved dog was put down after it was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Over 1000 take on the Muddy Buddy They signed up for mud and it didn’t take long for the laughs to follow. More than 1000 competitors took part in the annual Sport Tasman Muddy Buddy on Sunday. Participants lined up for the fundraising fun run in all manner of fancy dress including Mexicans, hula girls, bumblebees, Native American Indians and Smurfs, but by the time they reached the finish line they were all unrecognisable under a thick layer of mud. Fun runners and walkers gathered on the field outside Tasman School before heading over Aporo Rd and into the estuary for the run, which is now in its 8th year. There they were greeted with a 2km long course of mud that had many wading, crawling and stumbling to the finish line. Race options included 1, 2 or 3 laps, with an obstacle course to navigate at both the start and the end. “It went superbly, we were quietly surprised [at the numbers], given that the event was much later than it would normally run, but obviously the weather was in our favour and I think we just struck it right, so we were really pleased

with how it went,” says Angela Mangnall of the event’s organising committee. The Angels and Demons team decided to take part for the first time as a way of doing something fun with their children, while others were competing alongside their friends and colleagues. “My friend rang me up [the day before] to say come and do it, so it was an impromptu decision,” says first timer, Kat Halkett. “It was awesome, I loved it, so much fun for everyone.” Around 1050 people took part in this year’s event, a great improvement on numbers from last year, and together they managed to raise $15,000 for Tasman School. The organising committee say they would like to thank parents of the school for all their hard work making the day a success, as well as the event’s sponsors and everyone who participated. watch the video:

Southern Link info sessions attract wide variety of views Public information sessions for the Southern Link Investigation kicked off in Nelson last week, resulting in good turnouts but mixed views from local residents. Nelson Weekly attended meetings at Stoke Hall on Friday and Elma Turner Library on Saturday, which both attracted over 40 people. The drop-in style sessions allowed people to engage with representatives from NZTA, to gain a better understanding of the three proposed approaches to improve congestion and accessibility on Nelson’s arterial routes between the Annesbrook Drive and Haven Road roundabouts. The three approaches are: to improve the existing road network, widening the existing arterial routes, or building a new route. Public feedback from the sessions will be used to help

At the sessions, some locals said they were pleased to see the number of different approaches, with one young resident saying it would “take the heat out of it”. “It’s good to see that it’s not the Southern Link or nothing,” he said. Some were indecisive, and had come along to gather information and “get their heads around the options”. Others came to the sessions to confirm their view that the Southern Link is the best

option for Nelson. Stuart Walker, who is a member of the Nelson Residents Association and is also running for council this year, voiced his opinion that Nelson needs the link. “I sit in traffic and think, why is this happening? There has to be a better way,” he said. Another Nelson resident who was involved with the construction of the original motorway confirmed he was “totally behind it” and the link is a “very practical situation”. But, there were also those who came to say that Nelson

Peter Olorenshaw, from anti-Southern Link lobby group Nelsust was at Friday’s session in Stoke, and said that Nelson has “much bigger questions to look at”. “Traffic volumes are not increasing, and even if the Southern Link is built, Rocks Rd is still going to be busy,” he said. Malcolm Saunders, an excouncillor from the 1970s said improvements to the existing arterial routes, such as an overbridge or underpass on Waimea Rd by Nelson College, should be looked at instead. There is still one public information session left, this Saturday, April 9, at Richmond Library from 10am – 1pm. The grape harvest started around the Nelson-Tasman region late last month after a growing season that included late frosts, hail, disease and two significant rain events. Although growers managed to get through the early season challenges relatively unscathed, last month's downpour has resulted in outbreaks of botrytis which causes the grapes to rot and lower the quality of the fruit. "Some of the fruit is looking very good and some is looking bad," Rimu Grove's Patrick Stowe says. "The latest rain we had has created havoc because of the botrytis - it was too much rain at exactly the wrong time." However, Patrick says Rimu Grove are fortunate because they always hand-pick their grapes, allowing the bunches infected with botrytis to be cut out. "We have a good crew of pickers and we can be selective. The good fruit has fantastic flavours so we should have some very good wine this year." Four hundred warriors line up for obstacle race

Apprentices prepare for challenge Nelson apprentices competing in this year’s Certified Builders Carpentry Apprentice Challenge this Friday at NMIT will be building children’s playhouses to be donated to local early childcare providers. Certified Builders Nelson is inviting all local playcentres, kindergartens, crèches and other early childcare providers to get in touch by contacting Nick Matthews (nick@certified.co.nz) if they are interested in a playhouse. The playhouses are designed specifically for children of preschool age, built low to the ground, wide and stable, and measuring approximately 1.8 metres in height. The set-up includes a small climbing wall, stepladder and low swing.

Andrew Board Composure will be the key to this year’s Wairua Warrior Obstacle Race, says its organiser, but that’s easier said than done. More than 400 people have already registered for this year’s event, which will see competitors race either 6km or 12km across the muddy Happy Valley course. Along the way, competitors will encounter various obstacles which need to be completed, or a punishment of burpees awaits. Obstacles range from rope climbs to barbed wire crawling to sand bag carries, climbing walls and tyre drags. Organiser Greg Witika says all of the obstacles “doable” but the key for competitors will be to keep it simple. “The most difficult obstacles are the ones that don’t require a lot of energy, they require just a little bit of composure. But when you’re going through obstacle after obstacle, composure is kind of out the window. So those who can compose themselves will do well.” The Wairua Warrior is in its second year, almost doubling the number of entrants from last year. Greg says these kinds of events are gaining in popularity around the world and he expects the same here in Nelson. “It’s definitely an event that could cater for up to 1000 and that’s what we want to aim for. So we’re happy to have 400 participants within two years.” The race sees people enter in a team or

Thirty-six marshals are stationed around the course to ensure competitors get help, if they need it, and to provide some encouragement. Greg says the atmosphere of the event is all about fun and competitors help each out along the way. But before the “open wave” of the race starts, the “elite wave” will get a crack at the course. The elite wave has attracted around 30 of the sport’s top competitors from around the country and even some from Australia. Greg says he sees the elite section as a growth area.

“What we want to do is separate those who are really competitive and don’t want to get stuck amongst the masses of people and really want to challenge themselves. We want to really lift the awareness of elite wave and try to attract the trail runners, marathon runners and those kinds of athletes to the sport.” The first man and woman home in the elite wave will win a $500 voucher from Smith’s Sport Shoes. The Wairua Warrior is on this Saturday, April 9, at Happy Valley from 7.30am. Competitors can register on the day but won’t receive a race t-shirt. For more information see wairuawarrior.co.nz

Cyclists save rider from heart attack

Phillip Reardon, Tracey Parkes and Jeremy Talbot after they combined to help save a fellow competitor's life during the Forrest GrapeRide in Marlborough over the weekend. They came across a fellow competitor who was having a heart attack during the race. Jeremy is a volunteer fire fighter in Richmond and Phillip and Tracey are from St John.

Kate Russell Members from the Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade happened to be “in the right place at the right time” on Saturday, saving the life of a cyclist who suffered a heart attack during a bike race near Picton. The 46 year old Christchurch man was competing in the Forrest GrapeRide cycling event with his teenage son, when he went into cardiac arrest. But by a stroke of luck, fireman Jeremy Talbot, and Tracey Parkes and Phillip Reardon from St John, came across him and acted immediately. Jeremy says he was biking up the hill looking out for his wife, when he spotted her talking on the phone. “It turns out she was actually calling an ambulance,” he says. “When we got to him, we jumped in and started doing compressions and then the ambulance turned up three of four minutes after that. It couldn’t have been any better,” he says. “We had only just had CPR training two weeks ago, so we were definitely in the right place at the right time.” Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade senior station officer Blair Hall says he is “rapt" with the result. “It was really lucky, and just shows that the skills learned in the fire brigade can always be put into public life.” The man was then flown to Wellington Hospital, but Jeremy says that he recieved a text message from his wife yesterday saying he is now talking and will be heading back home to Christchurch soon.

Doctor’s mistake caused death Martin Johnston, New Zealand Herald

A junior doctor and a health board have been held to account over the death of an elderly man who suffered a drug error while being treated for a stroke. The doctor and the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board breached the code of patients’ rights, Health and Disability Commissioner Anthony Hill says in a report issued last week. At around 9.30pm on a day in 2013 not identified in the report, the 77-year-old patient suffered an “ischaemic” stroke, in which a clot obstructs an artery supplying fresh blood and oxygen to the brain. The unnamed patient was taken to a regional hospital emergency department — Mr Hill does not say which one — by ambulance, and at around midnight was assessed by house officer “Dr B”. Dr B talked with an on-call specialist Dr C and decided to give the man intravenous “clotbusting” medication. A risk of this so-called thrombolysis treatment is bleeding in the brain. The treatment is usually given in an intensive care unit, but Dr B decided to do it in the ED. She also prescribed the drug tenecteplase, rather than the expected drug alteplase. They are in the same class of drugs but in New Zealand tenecteplase is used for heart attacks rather than ischaemic strokes. “Dr B prescribed Mr A tenecteplase because she understood from nursing staff that there was no alteplase available at the hospital,” Mr Hill says. The man at first showed signs of improvement after the infusion, but a CT scan the next morning revealed a brain bleed. “Mr A deteriorated over the following three days and, sadly, he died from intracerebral haemorrhage,” Mr Hill says. The house officer made “significant errors or judgement”, which amounted to failing to provide health care with reasonable care and skill. The errors included failing to transfer the patient to the ICU, the dosage and mode of administration of tenecteplase and failing to consult the specialist about the use of that drug. The DHB’s stroke clot-busting therapy guidelines were inadequate, the house officer had not received adequate orientation to the guidelines, and there was “evident confusion” amongst nurses about the correct process. Mr Hill asked both doctors and the DHB to apologise to the patient’s family. He also recommended the DHB report back to him on an audit of compliance with its updated stroke guidelines, a review of junior and new staff orientation, and changes to its error-reporting system. NMDHB chief medical officer Dr Nick Baker has apologised to the family and says they have learnt “considerably” from the incident.

Be interested to know if there is a sterilization process involved here. Is it up to the customer to wash the glass bottles that are returned?, the milkman?, the farm? Previously with glass bottles, they were put through sterilization by the milk company to meet health standards before reuse. Great numbers to Positive Ageing Expo Jessie Johnston Hundreds of people, keen to learn more about making the most of their retirement, turned out for the annual Positive Ageing expo on Friday. The event, which is held at Headingly Centre in Richmond, showcases information, products, services and community groups that can help older people stay active, social and healthy. After an introduction by Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne, the public had the opportunity to browse over 70 stalls including companion driving services, St John, funeral services, mobility solutions, Nelson Grey Power and community groups such as Menzshed. The expo also offered three different seminars, one focusing on being online savvy in order to help older people avoid falling victim to online scams, the other looked at making the most of health services, including what questions to ask and how to receive the information in a way that can be understood,

while the third focused on keeping homes warm, healthy and comfortable by maximising their existing resources. “It’s been fantastic, a good range of stalls and a huge number turning up again which is great, we were a bit worried that the weather might have a dampening effect but it’s been great,” says Mike TasmanJones, community partnership coordinator at Tasman District Council. “I think [it’s popular] because under one roof and on one day people can find a whole range of different information, they can talk to the service groups and community groups involved, they can find out how they can get involved or how the service can help them.” Anna Cole from Stoke was amongst those exploring what the expo had to offer and says she was impressed with the variety of stalls the expo incorporated. “I’m in that age group of over-65, and other years I was still working so I wasn’t able to come [but this year] I wanted to see what’s available locally.”

Lions bestow highest honour on Victim Support manager Donna Smith made such an impression during her speech to the Nelson North Lions Club a year ago that they’ve bestowed the club’s highest honour on her. Donna is the service coordinator for Victim Support in Nelson, she is also an active volunteer with several community projects and a justice of the peace. Last year, she spoke to the Nelson North Lions Club about her roles and, as a result, the Lions club has granted some of its communityraised money to Victim Support. It was another donation that

Donna had in the back of her mind when she was invited to another Lions club meeting last month. But the club was instead preparing to present her with the Melvin Jones Fellow Award, the highest award in Lionism, an award rarely given to those who are not Lions members. The last non-member to receive the award from the Nelson North Lions Club was former Nelson mayor Peter Malone 15 years ago. Donna says the award was a “very special honour”. “I was really shocked and amazed

because this award is not often given outside of the Lions family. I was a Lioness in the past but I had to give it up because of the pressure of other work.” Lions Club world-wide recognise outstanding individuals by bestowing on them an award that is named for its founder. It is the highest form of recognition. Nelson North Lions Club member Noel Robinson also received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award at the meeting, for more than 20 years of service to the organisation.

Nelson sailors win prestigious award Two Nelsonians who have been cruising and racing around the world in their much loved boat for the last 35 years have been awarded with one of the most prestigious sailing awards. Tom and Vicky Jackson were presented with the 2015 ‘Blue Water Medal’ last month in New York, by The Cruising Club of America. The award, which was established in 1923, recognizes “a meritorious example of seamanship.” They now call Nelson ‘home’ and are back here for most of this year, working hard on revarnishing their boat and home for many years, ‘Sunstone,’ a nearly 50 year old sloop which they have owned since 1981. The couple have covered close to 200,000 miles in the Sparkman & Stephens-designed boat, and say they were “surprised and very honoured” to be named for the award, which has been presented to many luminaries of the sailing world, including Sir Francis Chichester, Rod Stephens, and Bernard Moitessier. “So many of the previous recipients are among the sailing heroes who have inspired us,” says Tom. “It was an amazing event, and we received a wonderful wel-

Photo: Kate Russell. come and had a chance to meet and talk to other award-winning sailors.” The couple initially raced Sunstone in numerous British offshore racing events, and during the period from 1982 to 1997 they collected a series of class and overall victories, including the British Commodore’s Cup in 1996. In 1997 they began serious worldwide cruising, and have sailed all around the world, winning numerous races. But, they say they grew to love New Zealand, and after being ‘live-aboards’ for over 30 years, they decided to settle in Nelson.

“We spent two winters in Nelson in 2000 and 2008 while in New Zealand cruising and living on 'Sunstone', before we actually moved here and bought a house in 2013,” says Vicky. “It was our first land residence since 1978 and Nelson is the prettiest city in New Zealand, has the best climate and wonderful surrounding countryside.” Vicky says they have no big future sailing plans, and are enjoying settling down and discovering what Nelson has to offer. “There may be a few more small trips in other parts of New Zealand – we love the water, so there will always be more sailing.” GLORIA LEATHER SUITE

Knitter takes a break to celebrate 93rd birthday For the first time in years, 93-year-old Daphne Henderson put down her knitting needles for the day. The Kensington Court resident turned 93 on Thursday and instead of her usual schedule of knitting for charity, she took the day off and spent it with friends and family. Daphne has been knitting since she was a young girl and over the past three years has spent her days knitting beanies and booties for “the wee bubs” at Auckland’s Starship Children’s Hospital. Daphne says she has knitted hundreds of beanies and booties for the hospital. “I can do a beanie a day and a pair of booties a day, I knit every day and after tea each night, it must be at least four hours each day. “I’ll be doing it for hours and someone will say, ‘put your knitting down, have a rest’ but I just keep going, they’d think I was sick if I didn’t knit.” The wool and postage is all paid for by Daphne, who gets her niece Sue Crowe to go wool shopping and post the parcels for her. “We send a big post bag up to Auckland every six or so weeks, with 16 hats and about eight pairs of booties. I get quite

proud when I think of all the babies with their beanies and booties, I’d love to see them,” she says. “Usually, one of the doctors will send me a little thank you note, he says ‘I go around the wards and when I look at the babies I know which ones you’ve knitted for’.” Sue says it’s unusual for someone of Daphne’s age to still be knitting. “It’s not that often that people in her age group can knit, most of them have bent fingers and poor eyesight but not Daph, she knits every day,” says Sue. “People ask her to knit for them but she’s so determined to do it for Starship that she says no, I’ve got to do it for the bubs.” And Daphne doesn’t have any plans to slow down or stop anytime soon. “I’ve been knitting all my life and I’ll keep knitting until I can’t. You’ll come back years later and say ‘gee, she’s still knitting, she’s 100’.” Daphne spent her birthday hosting “so many” visitors and was taken out for a cup of coffee and tiki tour of Nelson by her son.

Nelson-brewed beer has proven a hit with local drinkers, now it’s making its way to other countries. Brewing company Bays Brewery says it’s now sending several shipments of bottled beer to Singapore, where it’s being sold in restaurants and hotels. Managing director Peter McGrath says he was first approached about the shipment late last year but his Tahunanui brewery so was busy fulfilling existing orders he couldn’t give the supplier all that he wanted. “It was a bit embarrassing actually, but we were at full capacity already and, leading up to Christmas, we just didn’t have any time to brew more so we sent him what we could and have now sent a second shipment.” Peter says the bottled beer is a range of the eight beers that they brew, and getting the beer into new countries is a “real coup”. “We’re quite excited. We think it’s great for the local brewing scene that it’s happening and hopefully it will become a long-term deal.”

Her work to assist in reprinting the story of New Zealand’s first Chinese immigrant, Appo Hocton, has resulted in the book now being used in schools nationwide. Founder’s ANZAC Fete Founders Heritage Park is once again holding a special event to commemorate ANZAC Day this year. As part of WWI centenary commemorations, Founders Park ran ANZAC Apple Day last year. Due to the great feedback – even with the bad weather – Founders has decided to run a similar event again this year. An old fashioned fete will be held on Sunday 24 April 2016 from 10am – 3.30pm to commemorate ANZAC weekend. With an entry fee of $5 adult, $2.50 child or $10 family, visitors will be able to enjoy a day of old style entertainment including a bazaar, sides shows, vintage military vehicle display, military reenactment, variety show, bands and old fashioned games. Chair of Community Services Committee Pete Rainey says this is a chance to remember those who were a part of the war, one hundred years on. “This year is one hundred years since the first ANZAC service was

held here in New Zealand. This fete is a great opportunity to remember, as well as celebrate our history.” To make this day a success Founders Heritage Park is inviting not for profit organisations and clubs to take part in the Bazaar being held in the Energy Centre which will be decked out in vintage style. The Bazaar is a great opportunity for community groups to raise funds and raise the profile of their group. There is no charge to have a stall and stall holders will be provided with trestle tables and chairs. All they need to do is decorate their stall, provide the items for sale and their own float. Sustainability champion in Nelson British environmentalist Sir Jonathon Porritt visited Nelson recently to speak at a meeting organised by Air New Zealand and hosted by Nelson City Council, with community and business leaders from across the region. On the agenda was a discussion about sustainability, tourism and regional development challenges and opportunities, as well as a special address from Sir Jonathon, who said he was “delighted” to be back in Nelson. "There's something about this little city and the surrounding region that is hugely inspiring – an impression confirmed by meeting the Mayors of both Nelson and Tasman, and in the shared session with key community leaders.” The founder director of Forum for the Future said he was impressed with the level of awareness about today's big sustainability issues. “I loved the work being done on Project Maitai / Mahitahi, and with the commitment from those leaders to keep Nelson at the forefront of what is meant by sustainable economic development – and sustainable tourism in particular." Mayor Rachel Reese says it was a privilege to host the event and meet Sir Jonathon. “Sir Jonathon is Air New Zealand’s critical friend. He has challenged one of New Zealand’s signature corporations to embrace the difficult conversations around sustainability and climate change. In grasping that challenge, Air New Zealand is

prospering and has turned a challenge into multiple opportunities that are delivering real world results – including partnerships in our region. “I was honoured to have the chance to host Sir Jonathon as Nelson’s critical friend and to share his insights with other community leaders. “I welcome the opportunity to grasp the challenges around climate change and sustainable practice and leadership. A sense of community, science and innovation, and care for the outdoors are ingrained in our regional identity. That’s enduring stuff and it tells me that we can be sustainability champions and match Air New Zealand’s leadership in this space.” Ian Collier, Air New Zealand Regional Affairs Manager, said the Nelson region was chosen for the event as it has a significant role in New Zealand’s tourism proposition. “With an abundance of sunshine and natural resources, and being the gateway to the Abel Tasman National Park, it attracts many kiwis and international visitors every year,” he said. “We were delighted to be able to share more detail on Air New Zealand’s sustainability framework and our future aspirations in this area.”

When these are ready, you are welcome to take some home for yourself and your family to enjoy, remembering to leave some for others. What Council does ask you to leave behind are the flowers that bloom in many of our parks. The roses at Broadgreen and Queens Gardens, as well as the daffodils in spring, are often picked and taken home. That means others don’t get to enjoy the wonderful displays they create. Greenwaste to go elsewhere from July In line with Council’s strategic view on how it deals with greenwaste, from 1 July the Pascoe Street Transfer Station will no longer be accepting it.

Halting the spread of wilding conifers in Nelson Tasman Environmental agencies in the Nelson Tasman region are stepping up efforts to stop the spread of wilding conifers. Wilding trees are forecast to cost New Zealand billions in economic losses over the coming decades, impacting on industries from agriculture to tourism. Wilding conifers currently occupy around 1.8 million hectares, nearly six per cent of New Zealand’s land area. The Nelson Tasman region has large areas of hill country in public ownership, much of which bounds established forests so it is pre-disposed to wilding risk. Late last year, a regional stakeholder group met to work out a collaborative approach for addressing the issue that included representatives from councils in Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough, Department of Conservation (DOC), the Ministry of Primary Industries, Land Information New Zealand and private foresters. Commitments to date include a significant financial contribution from Nelson City Council, an extension of the Pest Management Strategy managed by Tasman District Council, cash targeted to wilding conifer control from local foresters, along with substantial on the ground control and technical advice from DOC. Mayors of Nelson City and Tasman District Councils wrote a joint letter in February to central government urging increased investment into the control of wilding conifers on crown land. Mayor Rachel Reese says Nelson City Council is doubling its efforts through

the Nelson Nature environmental programme to eradicate wilding conifers, increasing funding from $30,000 to $60,000 every year for the next five years. “Wilding conifers are a huge threat not only to our precious biodiversity that we value so much but also to our eco-tourism industry. They can be found from our coastal cliffs and margins to the inland hill country. Of particular concern is the spread of these trees into our special natural areas particularly the Dun Mountain mineral belt.” Mayor Reese says wilding conifers would pose a significant risk to the 17 threatened plant and animal species on the Dun Mountain if they were to continue to grow at their current rate. “We’re doing a substantial amount of work on the Dun Mountain over the next five years, removing all wilding conifers across 402 hectares this year with much more to follow. DOC is working closely alongside to help develop effective control methods for the work,” she says. Mayor Kempthorne says the Council has been supporting and enabling the collaborative efforts to combat wilding pines as part of the wider biodiversity programme for some time. “Now with the wider focus of our collaborative regional efforts, we will be able get the situation under control sooner," he says.

Free disposal for dangerous batteries Did you know that Council offers a free disposal service for rechargeable batteries that contain lithium? You can drop these batteries off for disposal, free of charge, at Council’s office on Trafalgar Street or at the Pascoe Street Transfer Station. Lithium batteries have the potential to catch fire under certain circumstances, especially if they are damaged. This can happen as a result of being thrown out with the ordinary rubbish and ending

up in the landfill. Indeed they were identified as the source of a recent fire at the York Valley Landfill. Thanks to the quick response by staff, the fire was brought under control quickly. Please use this free disposal service and reduce the risk of anything similar happening again.

Volunteering at Waimarama Community Gardens Waimarama Community Gardens, located just off Brook St in Tantragee Rd, is looking for volunteers. The gardens provide a wonderful place for people to learn and teach about organic growing of fruit and vegetables. Many people come just to be in the beautiful “garden” environment. The gardens are run totally by volunteers and more are needed. Wednesdays 9.30am – 12.30pm are volunteer mornings where support and guidance are available. Besides wanting more volunteers on Wednesdays, the organisation is looking for people to help with the following volunteer roles: • Handyperson for premises maintenance • Workshop co-ordinator • Finance person • Weekend volunteer co-ordinator • Compost co-ordinator. Changes to existing fees and charges Council is asking the public for feedback on changes to some of its fees and charges. Feedback is open until Friday 29 April. Fencing of swimming pools There is good news for swimming pool owners, with the three yearly monitoring review and inspection being reduced from $210 to $100. The proposed change is due to greater level of compliance with the legislation and reduced staff time as a result, as well as general feedback on the charge. Pool owners who are not compliant may face additional charges for any extra time involved in the inspection. Food safety New charges are being proposed for food premises to reflect the time involved for staff to register and verify food businesses under the Food Act 2014, which came into effect on 1 March. Visit the Ministry for Primary Industries’ website foodsafety.govt.nz for more information on the categories and rules under the Act. Resource consents There will be minor changes to resource consent fees related to deposits for some activities, however the staff hourly rate remains the same. To see further information around these proposed changes and provide feedback, visit the ‘open consultation’ section on Council’s website, nelson.govt.nz.

Other changes: Property information Property information charges are being amended to better reflect the level of service provided. For example, sole practitioners who are regular users will now be charged more to receive property information from the Council including access to property files, building consent files, resource consent files and geotechnical reports. They will have the option of paying per file access, purchasing concession cards or paying the regular user annual fee of $2000 (previously $1730). It will be the first time this charge has increased in over five years. The changes will apply from 1 July 2016. Alcohol licensing fees Council is extending the circumstances where it can use discretion to reduce alcohol licensing fees. One of the key contributors to alcohol related harm is the length of time alcohol is available. An off licence premise like a bottle store will be incentivised with reduced alcohol licensing fees to close by 9pm and an on licence premise such as a restaurant will also have reduced alcohol licensing fees if they close by midnight. No change There are no changes to the fees associated with dog control and health licensing (non food).

INSPIRE2016 to bring impressive line-up of speakers to Nelson Over 40 local, national and international leaders across their respective fields will descend on Nelson this year for the fifth annual INSPIRE2016 festival from 13 – 16 April at NMIT. Supported by Nelson City Council, INSPIRE2016 is an educational festival which combines science with humanities, with the aim of encouraging youth to think dynamically and creatively about their future. There will be challenging workshops, thought-provoking discussions and hands on experiments. This year’s speakers include international musician Claire Hastings, Microsoft NZ technology education speakers, Plant and Food researchers, along with speakers from many New Zealand universities, to name a few. After four months under new management, McCashin's Brewery Kitchen and Bar is almost unrecognisable when you step inside. Lincoln and Brigitta Womersley, who also own and operate BLINC Catering, began their new venture with a hiss and a roar late last year, and after a successful summer season have finally come up for air. The iconic McCashin's operation is now split into two, with the McCashin family continuing to craft their beer in the brewery, while Lincoln and Brigitta are all about serving up delicious food. “We thought it would be a really cool challenge, an excellent opportunity and another great business and family to work

with,” says Lincoln, on their decision to take over the kitchen. Lincoln and Brigitta both believe that McCashin's STOKE Beer and Rochdale Cider are excellent products and the chance to pair them with food was something they couldn’t pass up. “That’s where we want to go with this,” says Lincoln, “people are drinking the beer with some really good food and it becomes a memory.” As well as working the kitchen and front-of-house at McCashin's Brewery Kitchen and Bar, Lincoln and Brigitta are also kept busy with BLINC Catering, which is possible thanks to the reliable McCashin's Kitchen and Bar team. While Lincoln is still very much involved on the tools, the head chef Jody Keefe-Laing has full control in the kitchen, including the design of their new menu. “We’ve got a really great head chef who is on the ball, and we’re trying to make everything hand-crafted, right down to the tomato sauce and burger buns,” says Lincoln. Jody previously spent nine years working at Hopgood's and is looking forward to the challenge of managing his own kitchen. Already his new menu has hit the spot with diners, including weekly breakfast specials for Saturday and Sunday mornings, and a dinner menu featuring Braised Lamb Pie with Mushy Peas, Mash and a Jus using Stoke Dark, a twist on the traditional Steak, Eggs and Chips and Aoraki Alpine Salmon with Potato Salad and Cress. Thanks to Jody’s extensive culinary skills, diners will enjoy rustic, pub-style dishes, with an added refining touch, enhanced by an accompanying STOKE Beer or Rochdale Cider. The final stage of the Nelson Airport’s carpark upgrade project is almost complete, with the new public drop-off island now constructed at the front of the terminal. Football referee hangs up his whistle Andrew Board

For almost 40 straight winters Ian Hull has spent his weekends either refereeing football matches around Nelson, or assessing those who do. That run will come to an end this year, with his decision to swap a Nelson winter for a summer in Canada and Europe. But his dedication to the sport earned him a surprise life membership of Nelson Bays Football, last week. Ian began refereeing when he was roped in at the last minute to replace a friend who went down injured. “I arrived here [from the UK] in 1970 and got involved with Nelson City junior football and then started coaching rep teams. But I got involved with this guy Dennis who was a referee and I used to run the line for him. Then one day he rang me up just a little while before

kick-off and said ‘look Ian, I can’t do the game today, I’m injured. Can you do the game?’ That’s how it started.” And it continued for 38 straight winters. Ian says he quickly got his local refereeing badge before working towards his New Zealand badge. He refereed National League games in Nelson and Chatham Cup games. He admits that refereeing isn’t for everyone, but it was something he relished. “You can never force someone into refereeing. You can twist their arm to play a game because they’re in a team, but you can’t force someone to stand by themselves in the middle of the field. For me it was just one of those things, you have to have a hobby or something, and it just fell into place. I just carried on through the ranks.” He says there were times when players crossed the line, but it was a rarity.

“There has only ever been one player who I genuinely felt crossed the line on a regular basis, we didn’t get on. I think it's white line fever. Talk to a guy outside the field of play and he’s the nicest guy, cross that field of play and he changes. But most players realise that referees are doing it on a voluntary basis.” More recently, Ian has stepped off the pitch in his role as referee development officer for Nelson Bays Football. It was a role he enjoyed. “I thoroughly enjoyed the referee development role. My only regret is not geting more young referees into it. It’s probably been the only letdown.” Ian’s involvement in football isn’t over though. He’s already been asked about helping with the national league games when the competition returns to Nelson this summer. Peter Cobbledick has replaced Ian as referee development officer.

WOMEN'S TRIATHLON: Yvonne Shaw of Nelson, and Margaret Oliver of Richmond, begin the McFadden McMeeken Phillips Lawyers Nelson Women’s Triathlon on Sunday. The triathlon, which started at Maitai Valley, was in its 29th edition and saw close to 200 participants, including four teams, run 5km or walk 3km, and cycle 13 km before swimming four lengths of Riverside Pool. The triathlon was started in order to get women competing in a more welcoming environment and it’s an event that anyone can take part in, with runners and walkers ranging from over 70 to intermediate and college age. Amanda Ewings and Claudia Lee say they decided to take part to get a little fitter and this seemed like the perfect first triathlon to compete in. GODZone heads through Tasman

The bulk of the 71 teams taking part in the 530km expedition adventure race GODZone Chapter 5 have made their way through St Arnaud and are heading to the Matakitaki River south of Murchison. But the leaders, Yealands Family Wines – which includes Nelson’s Dan Busch – are well ahead of the pack and on their way back towards Golden Bay. Swordfox is in second place and

includes Nelsonians Brent Edwards, Ash Whitehead and Naomi Whitehead, along with Aucklander Stu Lynch. The six-day adventure race started at Kaiteriteri, with a kayak to Rabbit Island before competitors made their way to the Richmond Hills, Aniseed Valley and then down to St Arnaud. Competitors will eventually make their way to Totaranui, via Tapawera, before kayaking back to Kaiteriteri.

Team Cure Kids, featuring former All Black captain Richie McCaw, has been grabbing all the headlines and was in 23rd position at the time of print. Tasman swimmers up against country's best Talya Harwood, Thomas Heaton and Caitlin Delany of the Tasman Swimming Club tested themselves against New Zealand’s Olympic swimmers at the 2016 New Zealand Open Swimming Championships last week and came up smiling, with Talya and Thomas narrowly missing out on podium finishes. Talya, 17, competed against Lauren Boyle and made the finals in all three of her

events, improving her personal bests by 9 seconds in the 400m and 800m freestyle and claiming 4th place in the 1500m freestyle. Thomas, who attends Garin College, had two PBs as well, in the 400m and 800m free, and was 4th in the 1500m, just missing 3rd place by 0.05 seconds. Caitlin (Waimea College) had three PBs and three finals, including 5th place in the 50 breast-

stroke. The meet serves as the Olympic trial for New Zealand swimmers, and six swimmers, including Boyle, qualified in eight events. A further trial will be staged in Canada next week for the 13 NZ swimmers who are based in North America. It capped off a good week for Talya. The Waimea College student was named last week to represent New Zealand at the

World Junior Open Water Championships at Hoorn in the Netherlands from July 16 to 18. She was also selected for Sport Tasman’s Pathway to Podium programme for New Zealand’s rising young sports stars. Also chosen for the Pathway to Podium programme were Sam McKenzie of Tasman Swim Club (Waimea College) and Clara Foster of Nelson South Swimming Club (Nelson College for Girls).
